Ms. Cynthia Brennan

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Welcome to Beginner and Intermediate Band! This semester your child will be learning rhythm, tempo, how to play an instrument, general music theory, and music history.

I am asking you to help me become a partner in your child's education. I will only be in your child's life for a brief time and I would like to make a contribution that lasts a lifetime. I truly believe that in order for your child to be the best they can be, I will need your help. This help comes in the form of making sure your child attends school regularly, completes all homework assignments, prepares for tests by studying and asking questions, and most of all by encouraging them to succeed both inside and outside of the classroom.

I am so excited about teaching your child and working with you this school year! I enjoy watching my students grow over the semester and so glad and proud to say that I had a part in their educational success. The environment I strive to establish in my classroom will allow your child to prosper and enrich the lives and learning of others. I invite you to be involved in the classroom whenever possible because you are the most important person in your child's life. Please feel free to contact me if I can assist you in any way and I will get back to you at my earliest convenience. I will be more than happy to give you my cell phone number. Please text or call me at any time.  I have included my e-mail address as well as the school telephone number at the bottom of the page.

I also encourage you to join Remind. Remind is a free communication platform built for teachers. It enables me to safely and efficiently interact with students and parents about important information relating to the classroom and school activities. Remind is safe and easy because it is a one way texting app in which teachers can engage students and parents without needing to upload cell phone numbers and without having to give their personal phone numbers out. I will use Remind throughout the semester to remind students about upcoming tests, activities, project due dates, etc. Your child does not have to join but it is a great way for them to stay updated. I encourage you as a parent to join as well so you can also see when assignments are due and tests are given. I will give the instructions on how to join at the bottom of the page.

Thank you again for trusting me with teaching your child Band. As the leader of our classroom community, I am dedicated to giving your child the best learning experience possible!  Band is not always everyone's "favorite" subject for some, but I will give it my all to give your student a structured, challenging, and engaging learning experience.

Sincerely,

Cynthia Brennan

Band Instruments – Reliable Brands to Buy (update 2017c … listed created by Bradley Mariska and crowdsourced by BDG)

Just like any product, there are good musical instruments and others that not are worth the investment. If you are in the market for a new or used instrument, please consult this list so that you are sure to make a worthwhile investment (and look, you have LOTS of options!). Please email a band director if you find an instrument that is not on this list. There may be other good instruments out there, but these are ones that are known to be quality! With NEW instruments, you usually get what you pay for.  With used instruments, you can sometimes find a name brand instrument as cheap as the ‘generic’ equivalent.  But unlike the grocery store, ‘generic’ musical instruments very seldom measure up to the name brand equivalent. This is for many reasons:

    1. Instruments made by companies listed below have a history of producing quality instruments. They are made by expert craftsmen with years of experience.
    2. Instruments from these companies use high-quality materials. The instruments are more reliable, have a longer lifespan, and parts are easily repaired and replaced if a problem develops.
    3. Because they are crafted by experts and designed with quality materials, students can produce a quality sound more easily.
    4. Repair technicians keep parts in stock for these instruments. These companies use standardized parts and materials that a repair technician can fix. Low-quality instruments use parts that aren’t compatible - don’t buy an instrument that cannot be repaired!
    5. Just because an instrument is shiny, it doesn’t mean it will work well. Also, just because an instrument is cheap, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re “getting a deal.”  You’re better off saving your money and investing in a better instrument down the road or talking to a director to find a good used instrument.
    6. Even from the brands listed below, some models are better than other … or sometimes a vintage (used) instrument is actually better than the new ones. So...
  • ALWAYS CONTACT A DIRECTOR BEFORE BUYING – WE’RE HAPPY TO HELP, NO MATTER WHAT YOUR BUDGET!
